Thursday Night Pathfinder: Sneaking Around

So the party had the job of sneaking into the enemy army camp and getting their plans of attack.  Given a map of the camp, the party planned to take control of one of the outer edge scouting group camps and then sneak in. The party snuck up on the camp.  From 500 feet away they could see that there were 3 guards.  One was waving around a torch every few minutes while looking left and then right.  The player/character correctly discerned that they were sending signals to adjacent scout camps.  Oh, and there was a guard dog. Sneaking closer to the camp, they found the mechanism for the scout camps to work so effectively.  Every 20 feet or so, there was an item that was alarmed (per the spell) in the tall pine forest.  The party contemplated climbing over (radius = 20 feet), but ultimately Khalil talked Ali (catfolk monk) into getting into a bag of holding for "the climb".  He then dimension door'd and "let the cat out of the bag", so to speak...

Thursday Night Pathfinder: Death of an Old Friend

The party continued with the battle against the old wizard Pharalyn and the few survivors of his army.  They had surrounded the camp, splitting the party into lone individuals and attack during daylight and the strategy did not pay off.  Felix was killed by five of the enemy forces wielding rapiers. Pharalyn was becoming annoyed by the catfolk wielding a rather unpredictable magic rod.  He target the rod outright and blasted it into oblivion with acid.  Pinnacle got off a spell and then withdrew (his player was absent this week).  The battle raged on with arrows and spells flying. Ali the monk, Corrail the ranger, and Khalil the cleric gathered and prepared for an assault.  Unfortunately a group of four sorcerers sneaked out of the ruins, got line-of-sight, and blasted them with fireballs.  Corrail and Ali dodged out of the blast, but the cleric got his by the brunt of it. The rapier-wielding militia pulled back from attacking Roderick and Victae...

A Tale of the Thornhold Guard: Taking on the Old Wizard Pharalyn

In the keep, celebrating the recent victory, the party relaxes, having a drink.  The party consists of: Elven Ranger Corrail Half-elf Druid / Rogue Felix Victaerrus Shieldheart, 16 year old girl fighter Khaleel, human cleric of Desna Halfling Ranger Roderick Pinnacle, a human sorcerer Ali, a catfolk monk The commanders of the Thornhold's hired army comes to the party asking them for a flag to raise in celebration of their victory over the Chtulian star spawn and evil wizard.  The party, in return for allowing her to stay on as part of the keep's staff, has a beautiful flag sewn by the bard Krisora.  The flag is purple with a griffin and seven gold starts. The bard returns to the party and says that she wished to record their deeds in song and story of the victory at hand, but she needs a name for the party.  The party names themselves the Thornhold Guards, and Krisora is delighted at the name. Victaerus's mother arrives at the keep with news. ...

Thursday Night Pathfinder: Thornhold vs Zelbinion: Fight!!!

The party gathered their armies and placed them around and behind the keep, awaiting the arrival of the Zelbinion.  Barbarians lined the ground behind the keep.  Fighters with bows hid in the treeline overlooking the cliff over the harbor.  Cannons were positioned in and above the cave.  Archers and caster waited on the keep's walls and towers.  Row boats carrying some 50 kegs of black powder were docked all along the harbor.  Barrels above the cliff sat ready to soak the stairs need they require disabling. The Zelbinion sailed just barely into range when a deep dense fog started pouring from it, filling the ocean within sight up 20, 40, 60, 80 feet, and higher until nearly nothing below the cliff was visible, not even the sails and masts of the great ship. Casters took orders and sent a gust of wind across the scene, slowly pushing the fog away. The Zelbinion was revealed, perhaps 120 feet out from the keep, broadside toward the harbor. ...

Thursday Night Pathfinder: Finishing off the Beholders and Meeting Some Old 'Friends'

The party was facing down one last beholder.  Victaerrus charged and attacked but missed.  Calleel cast a spell and in a moment of great power, killed the beholder outright.  The party went on to loot the beholder caves of many pieces of equipment.  They helped the kobolds and several slaves as they looked for an exit.  Below in the dark throne room they found a quickly fading portal.  It took them back to the surface. Above ground, they landed on the top of the temple.  There was much rejoicing by the gnomes.  Palarandusk and Elminster appeared, commented a bit on the new party, scared the new 16 year old party member, and took the mace.  Word was that they were to return after a week.  In the meantime they had other troubles. In the local tavern, they walked past the hundreds of years old painting of the party that entered the temple.  Few were left.  The toll was high. Ahkra, Corrail's cousin, was there, waiting on the...

Thursday Night Pathfinder: Beholders, Kobolds, and a Mace -- Oh My!

The druid and Nickolai's players have developed work conflicts, so their characters find their ends in this week's game. --- When last we left our Pathfinding party, they were stuck behind a closed door in a beholder nursery. Callel, standing by one of the older beholder children, was ordered to open the door.  He opened the door -- Corrail closed it.  This repeated.  Caleel then cast a spell and walked through the wall into the secret corridor. The beholder babies mercilessly blasted Nickolai, who unprotected from the magic, was killed instantly. Caleel, wanting to leave behind his life as a slave, others quickly formulated a plan with the others.  The others hid back in the corridor while Caleel lured in the beholder child.  Once he was in the room, they closed the door and attacked, ambushing the beholder and quickly killing it. From there the party proceeded next door through a parlor.  In the adjacent room, they spotted a sleeping beholder....

Thursday Night Pathfinder: How Do You Deal with Missing Players?

Thursday nights we have a group of six players that plays Pathfinder from 6 to 9: R, who plays Corrail C, who plays Felix S, my daughter, who plays Victaerus B, who plays Caleel, the new human cleric A, who plays Nickolai the half-orc barbarian B, who plays The Druid Last night we only had 3 of the 6 players show up, and even one of those was 20 minutes late.  One player had told me in advance that he would be out, one player got stuck at work due to a no-call, no-show, and one I haven't heard anything from. This comes one week after we had to cancel our previous game due to 3 players being unavailable. From a GM perspective, missing half the party is pretty much a non-starter.  Usually missing half the party also means either the rogue or the healer is missing, which is a recipe for a TPK.  So last night we waited for an hour to see if anyone else would show up and then packed up. In general, my policy is that if you don't show up and don't contact...

Cut Scene: Back aboard the Zelbinion

Sheena woke up on a bunk.  The door opened and it got really bright. Thump, thud, thump, thud, thump, thud.  It was Fishguts, the Captain.  Sheena opened her eyes wider. "There you are, missy, back in the waking world."  He smiled.  "It's good to see your eyes open again."  Fishguts sat on the bunk.  "If you're feeling up for it, Phaeralyn, I mean, the old wizard wants to talk to you." Sheena caught on to him tripping over the wizard's name.  It was the first time she had heard it.  Maybe some things changed since she had been gone. She followed Fishguts across the desk to the wizards quarters.  Fishguts knocked and then opened the door, holding it for Sheena.  She stepped in and her eyes quickly adjusted to the darkness again.  The old wizard was reading a book with strange symbols in it.  She glanced at it but reading the symbols seemed to make her hurt more. "There you are, our favored crewman.  Seems yo...

Cut Scene: Sheena's Voyage

The sepuchral guardian, a great magical cage of iron surrounding the rotting flesh of a skeletal corpse with glowing red eyes, dropped two heavy arms against Sheena, landing with a hollow thud.  A plume of rotting stench spewed over the party.  Sheena's body crumpled into a pile of black with an uncharacteristic yelp.  The party jumped to her defense, shooting bolts and arrows.  Vicaterus drew her longsword and slashed at one of the creatures.  The second guardian fell. Eerily, its dead arms started to move in unison with the still standing guarding, pulling energy out of the walls into a ray of red feathery flicker.  With a loud boom, a beam streaked from the ceiling and hit Sheena and she was gone. Victaerus gasped and collapsed to the floor over the spot where Sheena was.  Tears flowed down her rosy cheeks and fell onto the shiny armor.  She dropped her sword with a clang and the shield crunched as her arm fell.  Her last rem...

Thursday Night Pathfinder: Beholder Town

The paty started off this time by backtracking to a previously unexplored area.  It was an octagonal room, with several large pillars.  Each pillar had a face with two arms and two legs on each side.  Felix, paranoid as usual, explored the room slowly with Yuri and Corrail keeping watch.  The room was empty and uneventful. The party then proceeded on deeper into the tomb.  The next room was very long with many pillars all covered in mirrors.  The walls were covered in mirrors.  The room was dark.  The party edged through slowly, using Felix's ropes of climbing to keep the party together and moving straight in the confusing space.  About 50 feet along the room, Corrail spotted shadows moving ahead.  A few steps later, Victaerus, who was out front, was attacked, having the strength sapped out of her by two shadowy creatures. The party attacked for several rounds, all the while Victaerus got pounded.  She was barely able to walk by...

Thursday Night Pathfinder: A Change of Party

Aboard the dead ship, the druid, Sheena, and Victaerus watched, backed by the rest of the boarding party.  The Sandman warned the oncoming group not to proceed, holding a torch over the hold.  Sheena went invisible and rushed up to him.  He dropped the torch and Sheena caught it.  The sandman dropped through the floor as sand running between the planks.  The Druid turned ethereal and dropped below, just in time to see the Sandman grab another torch from the wall and toss it into a pile of scrolls and black powder.  A blast erupted, magical burst followed by the explosion. --- The party of Corrail, Felix, the tiger, Yuri the winter wolf, Kiva, Chum the golem, and the rest defeated the two Dark Nagas.  The creatures nearby in the shadows skittered off into cracks and crevices into parts unknown.  Kiva suggested the party rest here.  Chum reinforced the door.  Felix searched the room and found nothing of value, not even food. Felix pu...
