I suppose it's a necessary evil that, when you have a player who's built for one specific type of combat and who's doing their best to get bizarre, obscure negatives in exchange for common positives (as an example, the character Minmax from Goblins: "+2 to hit. Traded it for my ability to wink."). But what about if they succeed these checks? If they find a clever way around your challenge, if they show genuine character and growth, do you suggest rewarding them with an encounter that plays to their strengths? Perhaps giving them an arch-enemy who ties into their backstory?Tim Dubbelmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03426111273484301884noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6147669162591407759.post-30348024123151820442017-04-18T14:07:39.428-04:002017-04-18T14:07:39.428-04:00I did this in college. Many times they focused on trying to undo each others progress and not progress the story line. It all culminated in one glorious battle around level 15. Might have been on of my best sessions ever, from a players stand point.

I've been fortunate enough to have players from both those groups in my main game for 20 years now. All campaigns and adventures hinge on how that dual party game turned out. I call it 'Turn of Events' adventuring. All the campaigns/adventures I run lead up to our are a result of what took place during the dual party game.

By the way, evil won in about 12 rounds. Nystul did nothing about explaining what went wrong-- in fact, he NEVER gave any idea where all the money he raised went (hint: sending him off to this or that convention, living expenses, etc.) His supporters, on not just one Project, cut him as much slack as they could, but the final word is--- he did NOTHING. The only thing Mike did was serve as a posterchild for what a grifter looks like on Kickstarter. He did the gaming world a huge disservice, because his raising of funds took away from other potential Projects that could have used that money (most Backers can't back all of those Projects they'd like to, so they pick and choose). To date (as of June, 2015) NOTHING has been done, and the matter has since been referred to the Federal Trade Commission. Mike is currently a cubical monkey at some on-line company, but here is a hint: interstate fraud is a Federal matter, and they have a whole lot more tools in their box than the Kickstarter guys you stiffed. In fact, these comments appear to be a thinly veiled attempt to cloak your disagreement with my opinion as an attack on the writing style of my blog.

I have purposely targeted my generic article with examples of the system used in over 70% of games played, indicating a focus on the expected audience. Supporting my statement that rolling less can be better, I give mathematical examples of where it can cause problems, specific principles that can assist with rolling less, and practical examples of where it can be used. Although the text is not as polished as it could be, the argument and supporting text are coherent, structured, and relevant to the majority of readers who play D&D and D&D derivatives.

Perhaps if you wish to have meaningful dialogue, you should state your opinion and support it with structured facts, or else you may continue to come off as an unfocused and disjointed commentor.Therisnospoonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05527063087932828811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6147669162591407759.post-80400155030034272452015-02-20T20:04:01.028-05:002015-02-20T20:04:01.028-05:00This article is really disjointed. There are already many games the facilitate and encourage this within the mechanics.

I understand what you are reaching for however, the article would benefit more from sticking to advice for D&D since it missed the bigger picture. This ISN'T a GM issue it a system mechanic one.

Don't get me wrong I'm not slamming you (even though it may be blunt) I want this blog to succeed.
